Summer Reading and Math

Welcome to the Summer Reading, Writing and Math Review Challenges for each grade. You should choose the grade your student will be entering in the fall. Please contact our Curriculum and Instruction Director Jessica Springer if you have any questions about the program.

What are WIGS?

You may notice that our summer reading and math challenges are called WIGS, or “Wildly Important Goals.” Through our Leader in Me program, students in grades K-5 learn about WIGs by setting a goal (or Habit 2: Beginning with the end in mind), tracking their progress, and celebrating their success when they reach it! We’ve applied the same familiar framework to the summer program math challenges to help students transfer this habit from the classroom to home and continue practicing this important life skill.

Accelerated reader (AR) USE DURING THE SUMMER

At CHA, our goal for summer reading is to foster students’ love of reading for both information and entertainment, and we look forward to seeing the many ways students have used the reading and writing checklists we’ve provided when we return to school in the fall. The AR program is a teaching tool utilized by reading teachers to monitor students’ comprehension, track independent reading, and set reading goals. For this reason, we do not allow students to use the program in the summer.
